I've always had difficulty in getting a smooth soup, like split pea. I didn't have a blender. I've watched a number of cooking shows on the Food Channel and would see them using a hand held blender. This is the one I ordered and I just love it. The soup was smooth as cream. Easy to operate and clean-up. I would suggest the first time you use it - whatever you want to blend - put it in a deeper pot until you get used to it. It is a quality kitchen tool and I look forward to using it often.  Looks good; broke after 2 days, December 31, 2012 This review is from: Viking Stainless Gray Hand Blender VHB300BK The motor shaft connects to the attachments (whip; blender) via a pressed-on plastic gear. This very cheap piece of plastic broke after just a few uses (the motor shaft end isn't even cogged or notched - just a round steel bar, so the plastic gear simply started spinning in place on the shaft).
